AWS Detects Active Exploitation of PHP Vulnerability Days Before Public Disclosure

AWS caught attackers exploiting PHP2Shell flaws four days before CVE disclosure. If your infrastructure runs PHP apps, patch immediately - attackers are already scanning for vulnerable systems.

Zero-Day Window Shrinking

Amazon's threat intelligence team detected active exploitation of two PHP vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619) on October 17, 2026, four days before the vulnerabilities were publicly disclosed. The attack originated from a commercial anonymization network and targeted AWS's MadPot honeypot infrastructure. This timeline confirms what security teams have long suspected: attackers are finding and exploiting vulnerabilities before vendors can coordinate patches and public warnings.

What This Means for SMBs

If your business runs any PHP-based applications (WordPress, custom web apps, e-commerce platforms), assume attackers already know about vulnerabilities before you do. The four-day head start in this case is enough time to compromise hundreds of systems. For small IT teams without 24/7 monitoring, this makes rapid patch management and vulnerability scanning critical, not optional. You need a process to identify which systems run PHP, test patches quickly, and deploy them within hours of release. Waiting for your monthly maintenance window is no longer viable when exploitation begins before disclosure.
